We just noticed at 4PM today, 8.9.12 - dsbl.org is causing ALL inbound mail to be blocked at all the ESVA spam filters we manage!

Remove that entry from 2 files and restart Mailscanner;

1. /etc/postfix/main.cf

search that file for dsbl.org - remove that part of the end of that string, save,

#postfix/main.cf:smtpd_client_restrictions = reject_rbl_client sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org, reject_rbl_client list.dsbl.org

2. /etc/Mailscanner/spam.lists.conf

last line of the file, comment it out

3. restart mailscanner - /etc/init.d/Mailscanner restart

All better.

 Thanks www.qaglass.com !

We had our truck broken in to the other night, they broke the window but never entered the vehicle!  We had Quality Auto Glass in Seattle put on a security film last year when we got the truck, I just figured since we had technology logos all over the truck it was a risk - and the price was easy to justify.

They broke the glass but would have to have a knife like Crocodile Dundee to make the hole larger.. hah.  Didn't happen.

Check it out..

Needless to say we went back for a new window and new security film treatment - makes us feel like VIPs :)

VoIP is a huge industry, with new players entering all the time.  You get new packages, choices, carriers, hardware, and tougher decisions to make all the time.  I'll try to outline what I've learned over the years to save you some trouble(and money).

What matters is value.  You don't buy voip for the high quality sound and reliability.  You buy a T1/PRI for that.  You get value out of voip, you get flexibility, you get control.

You get to have your phones anywhere in the world that has an internet connection.  You get to use computers, cell phones, desktop phones, all with your office phone system.  There are many free PBX offerings out there that will make the whole project cost almost nothing to get started.

We've been using WMware for a number of years now - even for very small business clients.

It's been so simple to run a couple VM's on a server and get some real benefits..

We just started using Synology products in the mix about 1 year ago.  We're probably using a common configuration:

  • Synology with Raid 10
  • ISCSI targets for each VM
  • Multiple VMware servers connected to multiple iSCSI targets

Now instead of taking snapshots of the storage system, or copying/archiving the VM's - we're also using a Backup Exec VM with a backup-to-disk location that is connected to a 200GB iSCSI target directly on the Synology.

  • VM stored on the Synology
  • VM has D:\ native iSCSI Volume on same synology
  • Symantec Backup Exec running backup-to-disk only

Here are a couple screenshots showing that it actually runs pretty quick.  This backup was about a 1GB sharepoint farm, and then a verify.

We'll post a follow-up to this after the other larger backups run a bit, like Exchange - 100GB multiple information stores, which are also stored on same Synology.

Fun.

alt   Amazon provides this great chart hidden in a cloud migration PDF - until you really learn their products this is a nice reference for choosing a storage platform with Amazon.

If you don't love reading manuals - maybe this will save you some time getting that first server up.

I found this article via appdeploy.com - http://www.bdts.com.au/tips/48-msi-packaging/119-deploy-adobe-reader-94.html

Pretty cool, it worked well - just use acroread.msi /quiet once you have it repackaged - or grab my zip file here to save yourself a little time.

Thanks to many cool new products we are seeing iscsi hit the small to medium size business market.  We are using it ourselves now in our lab and production environments.

As many unsophisticated tech departments experiment with using iscsi volumes in different ways I would like to share an experience to save someone out there some trouble.

You cannot connect 2 windows servers to 1 iscsi volume.  It will eat itself.

Windows/NTFS cannot be aware of multiple 'sessions' to the file system

In case anyone else wants to play around with FreeNAS, I'm putting up an OVF file here that you can use to one click import the basic installation to your ESXi server.

This is the default install, 1GB primary disk, and 3 extra blank 8GB thin spare disks to play around with.

We are testing this out now as an iSCSI target for ESXi actually.  More to come with results..

Right Click HERE - Copy Link Location, and paste into vSphere in the import OVF.  It will download the virtual disks from us here.

If you are like me and have to get into virtual server builds now and then - you probably hate the fact that it's so hard to find a copy of newsid.exe on the internet.

After it was 'retired' it seems you can only find a copy on strange download sites that look like you'll never get through their obstacles.  Search no more!

Here is the file.

Hopefully many sys-admins and VM builders will find this useful.

According to a report in the Financial Times, Google are phasing out the use of Microsoft's Windows within the company because of security concerns. Citing several Google employees, the FT report reports that new hires are offered the option of using Apple Mac systems or PCs running Linux. The move is believed to be related to a directive issued after Google's Chinese operations were attacked in January. In that attack, Chinese hackers took advantage of vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer on a Windows PC used by a Google employee and from there gained deeper access to Google's single sign on service.

"We're not doing any more Windows. It is a security effort"  one un-named Google employee told the FT. Other un-named employees are quoted as saying "A lot of people here are using Macs for security" while another employee added "Linux is open source and we feel good about it. Microsoft we don't feel so good about". According to the report, Google employees who want to continue using Windows or get a new Windows system now require CIO approval. The move has generated "mild discontent" among employees who have grown used to being allowed to select any operating system to work with, but according to another employee "It would have upset more people if they banned Macs rather than Windows".
